Quick guide: where crypto stands in Trinidad and Tobago

  • Individuals: TTSEC says the temporary ban does not cover people using crypto for personal purchases, as long as it is not done as a business.
  • Businesses: companies that exchange, transfer or sell crypto services must be authorised under the Virtual Assets and Virtual Asset Service Providers Act 2025. Firms already operating could continue only through TTSEC’s regulatory sandbox.
  • Custody: TTSEC has said the Act does not allow holding or keeping virtual assets on behalf of another person as a virtual asset activity.
  • Key date: new full authorisations cannot be granted on or before 31 December 2026.
  • Before you use a local crypto business, check TTSEC’s virtual assets page for the latest guidance.
